Plastic Pipe Recycling

Plastic pipe scrap includes rejected pipe lengths, start-up pipe and production cut-offs. These materials are often clean and can be reused without cleaning. This page shows how an HPC high-speed granulator with a dedicated pipe inlet reduces these long, hollow pieces to regrind.

Scrap from Pipe Extrusion

Pipe manufacturers produce scrap at different stages of extrusion. Not all of it has a finished pipe shape.

Start-up scrap
As the extruder starts, material may be cut away repeatedly until a stable round pipe forms and can enter the next machine. These early pieces can be irregular rather than tubular.
Color and material changeover scrap
Transition pipe produced during color or material changes on the extrusion line.
Off-spec pipe
Pipe with the wrong outside diameter or wall thickness, surface defects, or failed quality tests.
Cut-offs and test samples
Pipe ends and offcuts from cutting to length, along with test samples and rejected pipe lengths.

The dedicated pipe inlet handles long pipe-shaped pieces. Irregular start-up scrap from the same extrusion process can be fed through the HPC's standard opening.

HPC High-Speed Plastic Granulator

The HPC pipe granulator combines a dedicated pipe inlet with the standard opening for ordinary plastic production scrap.

Slender pieces and a bundle are fed into the HPC plastic granulator through the pipe inlet. The final view shows the crushed material leaving the machine.

Pipe Types and Applications That Fit

HPC granulators with a pipe inlet are suited to non-reinforced plastic pipe with walls up to 10 mm, including:

  • PVC sewer, drainage and stormwater pipe
  • PP-R hot and cold water plumbing pipe
  • Electrical conduit and fiber-optic ducts
  • Irrigation pipe
  • Corrugated pipe
  • Smaller HDPE and PE pressure pipe, such as 110 mm SDR 11 or 160 mm SDR 17
  • House sewer connections and distribution pipe

Pipe Size and Wall Thickness

Maximum pipe diameter depends on the HPC model and reaches 250 mm on the HPC800.

Slightly thicker walls may require a higher-power motor. Pipe material and dimensions determine the configuration.

Pipe Granulating Questions

What determines the regrind size?

The screen opening determines the regrind size. Pieces that are too large to pass through the screen stay in the cutting chamber for further size reduction.

How much pipe can be processed per hour?

Throughput varies with pipe diameter, wall thickness, material and screen size.
